Every active fire detection NASA has published since November 2000 — about 631 million of them. New detections are appended hourly, within a few hours of the satellite pass.
The data is served from a Portolan mirror of NASA FIRMS, consisting solely of a STAC catalog of GeoParquet files. The app is a full CNG implementation — no server, just files. Explore the data in Portolan browser, bulk query with DuckDB, GDAL/OGR, etc., or access the source code in the GitHub repository. Learn more in the Building Portolan: FIRMS blog post.
Zoomed out, the map draws cells rather than detections, aggregated onto an A5 grid and coloured by how many fall inside the cell and inside the time selection — so the colours move with the selection. The grid gets finer as you zoom in, and far enough in the detections themselves appear, coloured by fire radiative power. Click a cell for its numbers.
The timeline totals the detections in view, one bar per bucket. Drag the highlighted band to move the selection or its edges to resize it; + and − zoom the time axis, Fit frames the selection, Span jumps to a fixed window. Zoom in far enough and the monthly all-time archive is swapped for that year's daily one; untick auto to stay put, or pick an archive yourself.
